Trenching FAQs

How much does trenching cost?

Mike charges an hourly rate rather than a per-metre price. Most residential trenching is done within a day. For longer runs or multi-trench jobs, Mike gives an estimated hours range after a free on-site visit. Call Mike directly for his current hourly rate.

Do you install the pipes, cables, or ducting too?

No — Mike digs the trench. Installing pipes, cables, and ducting is specialist work done by plumbers, electricians, drainlayers, or fibre contractors. If you haven't got trades lined up, Mike works regularly alongside them and can recommend one.

How deep can you trench?

Standard trenching depths (400mm for fibre up to 1.5m for drainage) are all within range. For deeper trenches — basement drainage, commercial stormwater runs — Mike scopes the depth at the on-site visit. Max practical depth for a 5-ton digger is around 3m.

Do you work to engineer's or council spec?

Yes. Send through drawings, engineer's plans, or council requirements with your estimate request and Mike digs to those specs. If you don't have drawings — just a plumber or electrician telling you 'I need a trench this long, this deep' — tell Mike and he'll work from that brief.

Can you trench under or across existing driveways?

Yes, using the concrete breaker attachment to break out a section, trench through, and leave the trench ready for the install and re-pour. Often combined with new driveway excavation if the driveway is being replaced anyway.

What about existing underground services — can you hit them?

Before any trenching job, Mike does a visual site check and asks about existing services (power, water, gas, fibre). For jobs near known service runs, a service locate is worth doing — Mike can refer you to a service-locating contractor if needed. He works carefully around any marked services.

What happens to the spoil from the trench?

Your call. Mike can stack spoil on one side of the trench for easy backfill after the install, or haul it away in the tipper if you want it gone. Both included in the hourly rate.

What suburbs do you cover?

South and East Auckland — Beachlands, Botany, Clevedon, Flat Bush, Glen Innes, Howick, Mission Bay, Mount Wellington, Pakuranga, Pukekohe, Takanini, Whitford. Outside that area? Call Mike — he travels for the right job.
