Excavation FAQs
How much does excavation cost in Auckland?
- Mike charges by the hour rather than a fixed quote. Most residential excavation jobs are done within a day. After a free on-site visit, you'll get an hours estimate so you know what to budget. The hourly rate includes the digger, operator, tipper truck, and standard attachments. Call Mike for his current hourly rate.
What size jobs can a 5-ton digger handle?
- A 5-ton zero-swing excavator handles most residential and lifestyle block work — driveways, pools, foundations, drainage, section prep, water tank pads. For commercial-scale earthworks (subdivisions, large civil works), bigger machinery is needed. Mike will tell you straight up if your job is outside his sweet spot.
Can you excavate in tight backyards or behind fences?
- Yes — this is where Mike's setup shines. The 5-ton zero-swing digger has no tail swing and fits through 2-metre gates. The narrow-body tipper truck fits the same access. If your job has tight access, send Mike a photo and he'll confirm fit before quoting.
Do you remove the spoil too?
- Yes — the tipper truck is included in the hourly rate. Mike hauls spoil direct to the dump as it comes up, no on-site stockpile. For larger jobs (pool excavations especially), 6-wheeler trucks are brought in for the volume. Spoil disposal is part of the quote.
How deep can you dig?
- Up to 3.5 metres with the standard excavation setup. Engineered pile holes can go up to 5 metres with the auger attachment. For specific depth requirements (e.g. pool deep ends, deep foundations), share the engineer's plans and Mike will confirm what's possible.
Can you work to engineer's plans?
- Yes. For consented work — new builds, retaining walls, engineered foundations — Mike works directly to the engineer's plans. Levels checked with a laser level, depths and dimensions verified before the next trade arrives.
What if I hit services or unexpected ground conditions?
- It happens. Hidden services where they shouldn't be, larger rocks than expected, ground water — Mike calls you the moment something unexpected comes up so you stay in control of the cost. No surprise charges at the end of the job.
What suburbs do you cover?
- South and East Auckland — Beachlands, Botany, Clevedon, Flat Bush, Glen Innes, Howick, Mission Bay, Mount Wellington, Pakuranga, Pukekohe, Takanini, Whitford. Outside that area? Call Mike — he travels for the right job.
