Section Preparation FAQs
How much does section preparation cost?
- Mike charges an hourly rate rather than a fixed day quote — you only pay for the hours worked. After a free on-site visit, he gives you an estimated hours range so you know what to budget for. Most section prep is done within a day. The hourly rate includes the 5-ton digger, the operator, the narrow-body tipper truck, and all standard attachments (drilling auger, grab attachment, multiple buckets). Call Mike directly for his current hourly rate.
Do I need section prep before my builder arrives?
- Most of the time, yes — and it usually works out cheaper to book it separately. Builders can do excavation, but they charge construction labour rates and often subcontract it anyway. Mike comes with the right machine, the right experience, and an hourly rate that covers everything.
How much can you lower the ground?
- For typical jobs — decks, extensions, sunken gardens — anywhere from 100mm to over a metre. Mike scopes the depth at the on-site visit based on your plans. For deeper excavation (basements, significant cuts), the job may need additional planning or consents.
What if the job takes longer than estimated?
- Mike charges by the hour, so you're only paying for time actually worked. If the job finishes faster than estimated, you pay less. If something unexpected comes up mid-job (services where they shouldn't be, hidden concrete, thicker root systems than expected), Mike calls you before any extra work happens — you stay in control of the cost.
Can you work from my deck or extension plans?
- Yes. Mike works from architect's plans, deck installer specs, engineer's drawings, or just a clear brief from your builder. Send the plans through with the quote request and Mike will scope the job accordingly.
What happens to the topsoil?
- Your call. Mike can stockpile it on-site if you want it for landscaping later, or haul it away in the tipper. The hourly rate covers either option.
How long does typical section prep take?
- Most prep — a deck pad, an extension footing, a driveway subgrade — is done within a day. Larger or more complex jobs (full house sites, terraced gardens, larger excavations) can run 1–2 days — Mike scopes timeframe at the free on-site visit.
What suburbs do you cover?
- South and East Auckland — Beachlands, Botany, Clevedon, Flat Bush, Glen Innes, Howick, Mission Bay, Mount Wellington, Pakuranga, Pukekohe, Takanini, Whitford. Outside that area? Call Mike — he travels for the right job.
