Swimming Pool Excavation FAQs

How much does pool excavation cost?

Mike charges an hourly rate rather than a fixed per-pool quote. Most residential pool excavations run 2–3 days (longer than typical jobs because of the depth, the spoil volume, and the precision required). Call Mike directly for his hourly rate — he'll also give you a rough estimate range once he knows the pool dimensions and your site access.

Do you do fibreglass and concrete pools, or just one?

Both. Fibreglass pools need a dig matched to the shell with small tolerance all around. Concrete pools need extra width for formwork and steel. Mike works to the installer's plans for either — tell Mike what pool type you're installing and he'll dig accordingly.

Do you install the pool shell or pour the concrete yourself?

No — pool installation is a specialist trade. Mike handles the excavation, trenching, and spoil removal. The pool installer drops the shell or pours the concrete; the plumber and electrician run services. If you haven't got an installer lined up, Mike works regularly alongside pool installers across South and East Auckland and can recommend one.

How do I know if my access is wide enough?

Mike's digger needs 2 metres of width at the narrowest point and 2.4 metres of height clearance. The slider truck for spoil removal needs the same. Text Mike a photo of your side gate or access point with a tape measure showing the width — he'll confirm fit in 30 seconds, no site visit needed to find out.

How long does a typical residential pool dig take?

Most fibreglass pool excavations run 2 days, concrete pool excavations 2–3 days, plunge pools usually 1 day. Ground conditions (rock, heavy clay, hidden services) can extend that — Mike scopes this at the pre-dig site visit.

Does the spoil stay on site or get hauled away?

Hauled away. Pool excavations produce large volumes of spoil, so Mike uses 6-wheeler trucks rather than a standard tipper — it's more cost-efficient for the volume involved. Sometimes a skid steer machine is brought in to move spoil faster for loading. There's no stockpile eating up your yard. If you want to keep the topsoil for garden beds or landscaping, tell Mike at the site visit and he'll stockpile it separately.

Can you dig the plumbing and electrical trenches at the same time?

Yes, and this is usually the cheapest way to do it. Running the plumbing and electrical trenches during the same visit as the main dig saves a separate mobilisation. Mike trenches from the pool hole to the plant room location, plus any required overflow or drainage trenches.

What suburbs do you cover?

South and East Auckland — Beachlands, Botany, Clevedon, Flat Bush, Glen Innes, Howick, Mission Bay, Mount Wellington, Pakuranga, Pukekohe, Takanini, Whitford. Outside that area? Call Mike — he travels for the right job.
