Driveway Excavation FAQs

How much does driveway excavation cost?

Mike charges an hourly rate rather than a fixed day quote — you only pay for the hours worked. After a free on-site visit, he gives you an estimated hours range so you know what to budget for. Most driveway excavations are done within a day. The hourly rate includes the 5-ton digger, the operator, the narrow-body tipper truck, and all standard attachments (drilling auger, grab attachment, multiple buckets). Call Mike directly for his current hourly rate.

Do you do the new concrete pour too?

No — concrete pouring is a specialist trade with different gear and finishing skills. Mike handles the excavation, haul-away, and subgrade prep. If you haven't got a concreter booked, Mike can recommend one he's worked with across South and East Auckland.

Can you break up thick concrete slabs?

Yes. Mike's 5-ton digger with the breaker attachment handles concrete slabs up to around 200mm thick — which covers almost all residential driveways. Thicker or heavily reinforced slabs may need extra time, scoped on-site.

What if the job takes longer than estimated?

Mike charges by the hour, so you're only paying for time actually worked. If the job finishes faster than estimated, you pay less. If something unexpected comes up mid-job (services where they shouldn't be, hidden concrete, thicker root systems than expected), Mike calls you before any extra work happens — you stay in control of the cost.

Do you haul away the broken concrete?

Yes. The tipper truck is included in the hourly rate and hauls everything direct to disposal. No skip bins, no separate cartage company.

How deep do you excavate for a new driveway?

Standard residential driveways need 100mm of metal laid before the concrete pour. Council crossings (the section from the road to your property boundary) are deeper — 150mm of metal plus 150mm of concrete, totalling 300mm, and require a council inspection. Mike excavates to the required depth, shapes the ground for drainage, and spreads the metal. The concreter handles compaction, final levelling, boxing, and the pour.

What's the difference between a driveway and a crossing?

The crossing is the concrete section from the road to your property boundary — it's council-controlled and has stricter requirements. Crossings need 150mm of metal plus 150mm of concrete (300mm total excavation depth) and require a council inspection before the pour. The driveway itself (from the property boundary to the garage) only needs 100mm of metal. Mike excavates both to the correct depths as part of the same job.

What about the falls for drainage?

Mike shapes the ground so water falls to drains and cess pits. The concreter makes final level and fall adjustments before the pour.

What suburbs do you cover?

South and East Auckland — Beachlands, Botany, Clevedon, Flat Bush, Glen Innes, Howick, Mission Bay, Mount Wellington, Pakuranga, Pukekohe, Takanini, Whitford. Outside that area? Call Mike — he travels for the right job.
