Post Hole Drilling FAQs

How much does post hole drilling cost?

Mike charges an hourly rate rather than a per-hole price. The hourly rate covers the digger, the auger attachment, the operator, and the tipper truck. For a quick job of a few holes, it works out cheap. For a long fence line or full retaining wall, the hourly rate scales with the hole count. Call Mike directly for his current hourly rate and a rough estimate.

How deep can you drill?

Mike's digger-mounted auger drills up to 5 metres deep. That's deeper than any DIY rental or petrol auger (max ~1.2m) and deeper than most truck-mounted drills (typically 3m). 5m covers retaining poles, deep deck footings, seismic-spec fence posts, and most commercial pole applications.

What hole diameters do you drill?

Standard diameters range from 250mm to 600mm — which covers fence posts, deck piles, retaining poles, pergola footings, and most residential and commercial applications. If your job needs something outside that range, call Mike to discuss.

Do you need someone on site to help while you drill?

If ground assist is needed — holding a post straight while Mike drills, or clearing debris between holes — the builder or property owner typically provides that. Mike runs the digger and the auger; you or your builder handle the ground work. Most drilling jobs don't need active assist, but larger or trickier jobs sometimes benefit from it.

Do you drill engineered pile holes?

Yes. It's common to drill deep pile holes — up to 5 metres — as part of an engineered footing design for new builds, retaining structures, or sloped-site construction. Mike drills to the engineer's plans — depth and diameter per the specification. Send through the engineering drawings with your estimate request and Mike will scope it.

Do you install the fence posts or deck piles too?

No — Mike drills the holes. Installing posts, pouring concrete, and building fences or decks are specialist trades. If you haven't got a fencer or deck builder booked, Mike works regularly alongside them across South and East Auckland and can recommend one.

Can you drill through hard ground, asphalt, or concrete?

Yes. Mike's digger-mounted auger powers through clay, small roots, asphalt, and even concrete using augers fitted with special teeth for hard-ground drilling. Solid rock or very large subsurface obstructions may need different gear — Mike scopes this at the on-site visit.

What happens to the spoil from the holes?

Mike hauls it away in the tipper truck if you don't want it, or leaves it on-site in a pile if you do. Your call — both included in the hourly rate.

What suburbs do you cover?

South and East Auckland — Beachlands, Botany, Clevedon, Flat Bush, Glen Innes, Howick, Mission Bay, Mount Wellington, Pakuranga, Pukekohe, Takanini, Whitford. Outside that area? Call Mike — he travels for the right job.
